Kim McLean has been a proud local of the Hastings area for most of her life, with a lifelong passion for all things creative. While raising her family, she completed a Degree in Fine Art and a Diploma in Graphic Design, and has spent time exploring the powerful connection between creativity, the brain, and wellbeing. She believes that staying creative not only keeps the brain active - generating new brain cells - but also nurtures a deep sense of calm and balance.

Her creative practice is broad and ever-evolving, spanning drawing, painting, printmaking, pottery, wood burning and carving, weaving, and textiles. Currently, her main focus is on watercolours. A passionate reader, Kim enjoys telling visual stories that are often rich in colour, humour, and a touch of nostalgia.

She is particularly interested in the ways people connect with one another and with nature, and how these connections can spark joy. Her work may be familiar to some through her “beach bums” featured on the Bonny Hills mural or in her annual calendar.

Over the years, Kim has created everything from large-scale murals and fine art paintings to illustrations, sculptures, handmade products, and commissioned works for private homes, businesses, and community spaces - both locally and internationally. She also enjoys encouraging others to explore their creativity and offers mentoring from her home studio, working one-on-one or with small groups.
